Starting your day off on the right foot is essential for our productivity, mental health and general wellbeing, and one of the best ways to do that is by establishing a morning routine. A morning routine is a set of habits and practices that you do every morning to help you feel focused, energised, and ready to tackle the day ahead. Not only does this improve our wellbeing, it also sets us up for a productive, joyful and successful day.

Here are some of the benefits of creating a morning routine:

Boosts productivity

A morning routine can help you be more productive throughout the day. By starting your day with organisation and a set of intentional activities, you can create momentum that carries you forward throughout the day.

A calmer start to the day

Mornings can be stressful, especially if you're rushing to get out the door. By establishing a morning routine and implementing mindful practices, you can reduce stress and anxiety, creating a sense of calm that carries you throughout the day. This will leave you better equipped to handle unexpected challenges that may arise later in the day.

Increased energy levels

Establishing a morning routine can also help you increase your energy levels throughout the day. When you start your day with healthy habits you'll feel more energised and ready to tackle the day.

A morning routine doesn’t need to be complicated or elaborate! By implementing some simple habits and creating joyful rituals you can transform your mornings from rushed and stressful into a calm and present. Be flexible and use your intuition to guide you as you create a practice that works for you.

How are some ideas to help you create magical mornings:

Hydration

Before reaching for a cup of coffee, begin your morning with a glass of water. It rehydrates your body after hours of sleep and kickstarts your metabolism, which makes a huge difference in energy, mood and alertness.

Tech-Free Time

Avoid checking emails or social media right after waking up. Give yourself a tech-free window to preserve your morning serenity and focus on your own wellbeing before diving into the digital world.

Start the night before

By getting organised for our day the night before our mornings will be so much smoother. Simple things like emptying the dishwasher, preparing your clothes for the next day, packing your work bag and laying out breakfast items will make more space and ease in the morning. Create your to-do list / checklist the evening before.

Time management

Set yourself some extra time to get ready in the morning, this will give you the time to move through your morning without rushing.

Mindful rituals

Turning simple tasks into rituals involves infusing them with intention, mindfulness, and a sense of purpose. This could be as simple as taking a few moments to be still and savour your morning coffee, or being fully present as you apply your make up. How can you bring more sacredness into the simple moments?

Morning Pages

Journaling morning pages is a practice popularised by Julia Cameron in her book "The Artist's Way." It's a form of stream-of-consciousness writing done first thing in the morning. The goal is to clear your mind, tap into your creativity, and gain clarity on your thoughts and emotions. Ideally, do it immediately upon waking, as your mind is still in a semi-dream state.

Begin writing free flowing without any specific agenda. Don't worry about grammar, spelling, or making sense. Just let your thoughts flow naturally. Write whatever comes to mind, even if it seems random or trivial. At first, your morning pages might feel scattered or mundane. Over time, they can reveal patterns in your thinking, provide insights, and even spark creative ideas.

Tapping

A few rounds of FasterEFT™ tapping is one of my favourite things to do in the morning. Use this simple technique to release any worries on your mind, tap in affirmations and release any heaviness or challenging thoughts and emotions. Tapping is a somatic mind-body technique that involves tapping on meridian points, helping to lower our fight and flight response and release stress.

Practice gratitude

A morning gratitude practice is a powerful way to start your day with appreciation and set yourself up for success. Take a few moments each morning to reflect on the things in your life that you're grateful for, and express gratitude for those things. This is a great practice to do with children and family!

Movement

Moving our body is a great way to get the energy flowing and boost the feel good chemicals in the brain. Morning movement can be as simple as putting on your favourite music and dancing for 5 minutes or doing some yoga or stretching. Experiment and find what works for you!

Learning time

This could be listening to a podcast, reading a few pages of a book, or practicing affirmations and visualisation exercises. Incorporating learning and self-development into your morning routine and is a great way to get inspiration and empowerment as you start your day.

Incorporating a magical morning routine into your daily life can be transformative. It sets the stage for a day filled with purpose, joy and productivity. Remember, your routine doesn't have to be elaborate or time-consuming; it should align with your goals and and make you feel empowered.

As you embark on this journey, be patient with yourself. Building a morning routine takes time, and it may require adjustments along the way. Listen to your body and practice self compassion as you invest in creating a morning routine that resonates with you.
